Late-night eating

The city that never sleeps has the food infrastructure to back that up. Here's where to eat at 1am.

The 24-hour diner

New York has a genuine 24-hour diner culture that most other cities don't — Greek-owned, Formica-countered, coffee always on, menu runs from pancakes to club sandwiches to moussaka depending on the spot. The corner diner at 2am after a show or a long night is one of the most specifically New York experiences available, and it costs about $15 including tip. Diners cluster across Midtown, the East Village, and throughout Queens.

Pizza by the slice, all night

The highest density of late-night slice options is in the East Village and around the NYU campus in Greenwich Village, where demand from students and nightlife crowds keeps multiple pizza counters open until 4am or later. Quality varies; price is uniformly low. Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street in the West Village has remained reliably good at late hours for decades.

Bodegas

The New York bodega — a small corner store selling groceries, beer, household items, and often made-to-order sandwiches — is the late-night fallback for half the city's residents. A "bacon, egg and cheese on a roll" from a bodega at 1am, assembled quickly on the flat-top grill behind the counter, is a genuine New York food experience and typically costs under $5.

Koreatown

The block of 32nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Midtown (nicknamed K-Town) runs Korean restaurants late — many until 3 or 4am — and is one of the most reliable late-night options in Manhattan for a proper sit-down meal. Korean fried chicken, soon tofu stew, and grilled meats at 2am are all on offer and genuinely good.

The outer boroughs after dark

Flushing's food courts in Queens run late, and the blocks around Main Street have late-night dim sum and hot pot options. Brighton Beach's restaurants on the boardwalk stay open late on weekends in summer. Jackson Heights has late-night South Asian options along Roosevelt Avenue below the elevated 7 train tracks.
